The East London Region
The area that is described as “East London” for the purposes of classifying real estate zones here in London encompasses the downtown and most of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city. Although most residents of the city generally think of East London as that part of the city that is “East of Adelaide;” when it comes to selling real estate, East London includes all of those parts of London nestled between the north and south forks of the Thames River (see map). As a result, East London includes the city’s downtown area, most of the city’s oldest and most prestigious areas (all except Old South and the Blackfriars neighbourhoods) as well as much of the city’s manufacturing, industrial and warehousing and a number of “working class” neighbourhoods. East London is the economic engine of the city.
Although locally there is sometimes a negative perception of those parts of the city located “East of Adelaide,” most of these attitudes are unfounded and often buyers can find real value in some great east end communities. Residents of the east end know that they often enjoy large lots, convenient shopping, well integrated city services, a high quality of life, and for many, a short commute to work. Often they are able to get all of this at a price that is lower than a comparable property in other parts of the city.
