The Neighbourhood of Westmount

Westmount began in the late 1960’s as a planned community developed by Sifton Properties.  The centerpiece of the neighbourhood was to be Westmount Mall, a shopping facility that would take the name of its community.  The area is a mix of high rise condominium and rentals, townhouses and fully detached homes at several different price points.  Even though there is a mix of property values, when people think of Westmount, the image that most comes to mind is rolling suburban streets with larger than average homes on larger than average lots.  Many of the homes have traditional layouts with living rooms, dining rooms and a main floor family room at a price point that is affordable for many families.  Most people moving into the neighbourhood are happy to make the trade off for an older home (30+ years) to get a good sized family home.  Combine family friendly homes with a lot of green space and parks, and Westmount continues remain a popular place to raise a family.

Westmount Shopping Centre

First opened in 1971, Westmount Shopping Centre began its life with 15 stores, including a Dominion grocery store.  The mall has been affected by shifts in shopping habits and is currently in the process of a significant redevelopment.

Parks and Other Places of Interest

The Westmount area is home to a number of named parks, a testament to its origin as a planned community.  These parks include the Berkshire Village Park, Basil Grover Park, Odessa Park, Arthur Ford Park, Belmont Park, Norton Estates Park, Butler Park, Westmount Lions Park, Jesse Davidson Park, Village Green Park. McMaster Park, Lynngate-Westmount Park, and Parks Edge Park.

Schools

Area schools include Westmount Public School, W. Sherwood Fox Public School, Arthur Ford Public School, Sir Isaac Brock Public School, St. Jude Catholic School, St. Rose of Lima Catholic School and Saunders Secondary School.  Montessori Academy of London is also located in Westmount.
